SIALKOT LAHORE MOTORWAY - BRIEF |
||
|
BRIEF
On April
05, 2006, Punjab government took a huge decision to build Sialkot Lahore
motorway on the longstanding demands of people of Sialkot. With an
export of $1bn and being an important industrial city, Punjab government
rightfully decided to give Sialkot the facility of a motorway. The six-lane motorway between Sialkot and Lahore (two important industrial centres of the Punjab) would give impetus to economic activity in the province. Proposed motorway would pass through Gujranwala and would be linked to Gujrat, Wazirabad, Muridke and other industrial centres. The proposed motorway would help Sialkot industrialists in marketing their finished goods speedily besides transportation of cargo between the two cities. This project would facilitate the export of products manufactured or harvested in Sialkot and other areas around it and would have a positive impact on Pakistan’s economy. The motorway would also facilitate foreign businessmen visiting the city.
There are also plans to build three industrial zones over an area of 3,000 acres of land along Lahore-Sialkot Motorway which would boost economic activities besides generating employment opportunities. Two universities in collaboration with Germany and Sweden are also being setup along motorway. Swedish university is being setup at Sialkot, while German university is planned to setup near Lahore alongside motorway. These universities will play an important role in the promotion of education in the area.
The motorway has also been named as Shahra-e-Sanat that would reduce the distance between Lahore and Sialkot to 60 minutes. There is no doubt that Lahore-Sialkot Motorway project will play an important role in the improvement of means of communication as well as economic and industrial development.
In June 2006, Planning and Development board of Punjab released Rs. 10.93 million to NESPAK, Lahore to prepare a feasibility report of construction of Sialkot-Lahore Motorway, a mega project of costing roughly an amount of Rs.20 billion. The initial plan envisaged dual carriageway with three lanes on each side besides building of various bridges over several canals, drains and on river Ravi.
Earlier this year in January 2007, NESPAK consultancy services for Design & Construction supervision of Sialkot has been acquired. NESPAK and Highways and Transportation Engineering Division, have signed Contract in January, for Engineering Consultancy Services with Communication and Works Department, for Sialkot-Lahore Motorway Project.
President on his recent visit to Sialkot officially inaugurated the project by stone laying ceremony.
By the grace of Almighty Allah, Sialkot people hope that motorway will be completed by the end of 2010.
